Adaptive Teaching for Neurodivergent Pupils: Why the EEF Five-a-Day Matters

Adaptive teaching is not about lowering expectations. It is about removing barriers so that every pupil has a fair chance to access learning, participate meaningfully and experience success. For neurodivergent pupils, including autistic pupils, pupils with ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and other differences in learning, attention, communication or sensory processing, this is essential.
Too often, support for neurodivergent pupils is seen as something additional, separate or only available once difficulties have escalated. However, effective inclusion begins in the everyday classroom. It sits in the way lessons are explained, how tasks are structured, how pupils are supported to think, how adults check understanding and how the environment is adapted to reduce unnecessary barriers.
This is where the EEF’s Five-a-day approach is so useful.
The Education Endowment Foundation identifies five evidence-informed approaches that teachers should consider for pupils with SEND: explicit instruction, cognitive and metacognitive strategies, scaffolding, flexible grouping and the use of technology. These approaches are not complicated bolt-ons. They are practical, everyday teaching habits that strengthen high-quality teaching for all pupils, while being particularly important for many pupils with SEND.
Research by Petersson-Bloom and Holmqvist (2022) also supports this direction. Their systematic review explored strategies for supporting inclusive education for autistic students and highlighted the importance of adapting and modifying classroom practice, communication, learning activities and the educational environment. This aligns closely with the principle of adaptive teaching: we do not wait for pupils to fail before changing the approach; we anticipate barriers and plan teaching so more pupils can access learning from the start.
1. Explicit instruction: reducing uncertainty
Many neurodivergent pupils experience difficulty when teaching is too implied, fast-paced or language-heavy. Explicit instruction helps because it makes learning clear.
This means teachers:
explain the learning in small steps;
model exactly what success looks like;
use clear examples and non-examples;
check understanding regularly;
avoid assuming pupils have understood just because they are quiet.
For autistic pupils, explicit instruction can reduce anxiety because expectations are clear. For pupils with ADHD, it can reduce cognitive overload because the task is broken down. For pupils with dyslexia or language-processing difficulties, it can make the learning more accessible because key information is made visible and repeated.
Explicit instruction is not spoon-feeding. It is good teaching made visible.
2. Cognitive and metacognitive strategies: helping pupils understand how to learn
Many neurodivergent pupils know far more than they can always organise, express or retrieve under pressure. Cognitive and metacognitive strategies support pupils to plan, monitor and review their learning.
In the classroom, this might look like:
using checklists;
modelling “thinking aloud”;
teaching pupils how to approach a task;
using visual prompts;
giving pupils time to reflect on what helped them succeed.
For pupils with executive functioning difficulties, this can be powerful. Instead of simply saying, “get started” or “try harder”, teachers provide the thinking structure that helps pupils know what to do first, what to do next and how to check their work.
This is particularly important for neurodivergent pupils who may struggle with organisation, working memory, planning, attention or task initiation.
3. Scaffolding: providing support without creating dependence
Scaffolding is one of the most important parts of adaptive teaching. It means giving pupils the support they need at the point they need it, then gradually reducing that support as confidence and independence grow.
This might include:
sentence starters;
worked examples;
writing frames;
visual task boards;
word banks;
chunked instructions;
adult prompting that fades over time.
For neurodivergent pupils, scaffolding can be the difference between disengagement and participation. A pupil who appears avoidant may actually be overwhelmed. A pupil who refuses to write may not be refusing the learning, but struggling with the number of steps involved.
Scaffolding allows teachers to keep the learning ambition high while making the route into the task more accessible.
4. Flexible grouping: belonging without being stuck in a label
Flexible grouping means pupils are not permanently placed in a “low ability” group or always separated from their peers because they have SEND. Instead, grouping changes depending on the task, the support needed and the learning intention.
This matters because neurodivergent pupils need both support and belonging. They may sometimes benefit from adult-guided work, paired learning, quiet spaces or small group teaching. At other times, they should have access to rich discussion, peer collaboration and whole-class learning.
Flexible grouping avoids the trap of assuming that SEND means a pupil always needs the same type of support. It recognises that need is dynamic. A pupil may need support with writing but excel in verbal reasoning. A pupil may need help with transitions but thrive in practical problem-solving. A pupil may need reduced sensory load but still require challenge.
Good adaptive teaching notices this and responds accordingly.
5. Technology: removing barriers, not replacing teaching
Technology can be a powerful tool for neurodivergent pupils when it is used purposefully. It should not be used as a reward, distraction or replacement for quality teaching, but as a way of improving access.
Examples include:
text-to-speech tools;
speech-to-text software;
visual timers;
assistive reading tools;
task management apps;
digital mind maps;
coloured overlays or screen adjustments;
communication supports.
For pupils with dyslexia, technology can reduce barriers linked to reading and writing. For pupils with ADHD, it can support organisation and focus. For autistic pupils, it can provide predictability, visual structure and alternative ways to communicate understanding.
Technology works best when it is matched carefully to the pupil’s need and embedded into normal classroom routines.
Why this matters
Adaptive teaching is not a soft option. It is a rights-based, evidence-informed and inclusive approach to classroom practice. It helps schools move away from a model where pupils must fail before support is adjusted. Instead, it encourages teachers to ask: what barriers might this pupil face, and how can I reduce them without reducing ambition?
The EEF Five-a-day gives schools a simple framework for doing this consistently. It supports teachers to focus on the things that make the biggest difference in everyday lessons: clarity, structure, modelling, scaffolding, flexibility and access.
For neurodivergent pupils, these approaches can reduce anxiety, improve participation, support independence and increase a sense of belonging. They also benefit the whole class. A classroom that is clearer, calmer, more structured and more responsive is better for everyone.
Inclusion is not achieved by placing neurodivergent pupils in mainstream classrooms and hoping they cope. Inclusion happens when teaching changes enough for pupils to genuinely belong, participate and learn.
Adaptive teaching, supported by the EEF Five-a-day, gives teachers a practical way to make this happen every day.
